Morning Routine

Every Tuesday for the past 6 months I have been listening to a podcast called The Skinny Confidential Him and Her Podcast. They are known for interviewing very successful people from all different backgrounds and careers. One question Lauryn and Michael always asked was “What is your morning routine?” And every one of these people had a very specific morning routine! After hearing about 5 different morning routines I started to think about my own morning routine which was hit snooze 4 times, roll out of bed, wash my face/do my makeup and straighten my hair, pour some coffee, and run out the door to work. Basically, the worst morning routine ever!!! When 2 o’clock hit, I was ready for a nap, I was happy at work, but did not have the type of energy that my students deserved.

I was always watching my friend Jen, on IG working out every morning. I, however, was always against working out in the morning because “I needed to sleep as much as possible” and the thought of getting up earlier than 7:00am sounded horrible.

I knew deep down that if I started a morning routine I could grow to love it. I mean if all the successful people in the world were getting up and had morning routines that were meaningful, I could do it to! So, I messaged Jenn and told her I was ready to start Beach Body. Typical challenge groups, she said, would last 3 weeks and challengers could use any program they wanted. However, the program that we would be doing in our was a newly released Shaun T. workout. It was a 6-week program, each workout lasting 20 minutes. I thought it as a perfect way to get started because I could easily do a 20 minute workout and still have time for my other components of the morning routine I wanted to instill. What I didn’t realize at the time was how much Beach Body focuses on morning routine. I became obsessed.

I learned that morning routines are a great way to make sure you do something for yourself EVERY DAY. Every morning for 6 weeks I woke up at 6:00am WITHOUT PUSHING SNOOZE and read a chapter out of my personal development book of choice (Girl Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis) while I woke up. Then, I would do my workout and drink my superfood shake and some coffee.

I have continued to do this everyday. Because of my morning routine I have more energy, I sleep better at night (I have always struggled with falling and staying asleep), I don’t hit the 2pm tiredness (although I still love a good 20 minute nap), I FEEL healthier, I am stronger, I am happier in general!

Do you have a morning routine? Have you been thinking about making your morning routine better? Feel free to message me if you need ideas on how you can make your morning routine something you look forward to everyday!

5 Easy Ways to Live a Greener Life

Today I read a story about a dead whale who had been found with 88lbs of plastic in his stomach! How horrible is this?!

While everyone is quick to be extra “green” on Earth Day, I thought a post about being green everyday would be helpful! Perhaps you already are on this track to helping our beautiful planet, animals, and mankind.

These are just some of the easiest ways that I have found to live a greener life without even having to think twice about it!

1. Recycle– yes, I know it may cost a little more, but the only thing that runs through my head when I put a plastic container in the trash is what ocean it will end up in or what turtle or tiger will be eating it when it inevitably makes it way to Africa. Okay, maybe that is a little far fetched- but seriously- it will never decompose! It stresses me out just thinking about it. So, I choose to recycle!

2. Reusable shopping bag– I will admit, this one is a bit harder for me to remember, but I try really hard to remember. However if I do forget one of my 10 reusable Fresh Thyme bags and must accept the plastic ones- I always reuse them as bathroom trash bags. I’m ready for Indiana to follow in the footsteps of Austin, TX where plastic grocery bags are banned. Maybe then I would remember to bring my reusable bags every grocery trip!

3. Skip the clear produce bags– you should be washing all of your produce anyway so why not skip putting your produce in any plastic bags at all?! If you must put your produce in the clear bags- invest a small amount for reusable produce bags!

4. Reusable water bottles– So easy! If you need a water purification system, get a Brita and save those animals from ingesting plastic water bottles! If you must use plastic water bottles, RECYCLE THEM!!!

5. Reusable straws– I just invested in some today from Swzle! Use code jess20 to get 20% off (not sure how long this discount is good for). They had plenty of colors but I went for the rainbow! They also have straw cleaners and carrying cases so you can throw them in your purse and use them on the go or in restaurants!

None of the above tips are very innovative or new ideas! They are just my way doing my part to keep the Earth beautiful! I would love to hear your ideas on how to live a greener life! Comment below!

kindness counts

Tis’ the season to be intentional about thinking of others. Ideally this season would carry over into the rest of the year, but after the holidays people become wrapped up with their own lives again- work, kids, keeping in touch with family and friends, exercise among other things fill our to-do lists.

I’m already starting to think about what my goals for next year will be. My goal is to continue the goal of being intentional about doing things for others. I came across this December Advent Calendar earlier today and  I think that it is the perfect way to start. Let me know if you want to participate with me by commenting below!
